Rio Tinto Oyu Tolgoi mine looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Mine Development & Shafts to be responsible for the collation and analyses of rock mass data to verify the rock mass' response to mining and thus ensure that the best data is utilised in all geotechnical analyses leading to mine design and operations.

Our Technology and Innovation (T&I) group provides world-class project delivery services to Rio Tinto’s product groups and businesses and is responsible for delivering the next exciting phase for the Oyu Tolgoi operation as mining transitions to underground.

What the role entails

This role is a great opportunity to be involved in a world class project from the start-up phase.

Working a 4/2 FIFO roster, and reporting to the Geotechnical Manager, you will be:
  • Implementing best practise guidelines in geotechnical engineering, mine design and mining operations.
  • Conducting rock mass assessments / stability assessments and ground support recommendations for incorporation into mine design and planning.
  • Implementing operating procedures for all geotechnical activities and quality assurance / quality control practices.
  • Assessing all ground support quality assurance / quality control data to quantify the quality of Installation and effectiveness of support systems and to ensure compliance with the contract specifications and Ground Control Management Plan (Ground Control Management Plan).
  • Undertaking appropriate testing and monitoring of all elements comprising the ground support systems installed during the project and, setups and maintains a data repository (database) for this data.
  • Providing training and communication to operators in geotechnical awareness and quality assurance systems.
What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • Registration as a certified geotechnical engineer by the state/country Professional Engineering body 
  • Core underground geotechnical engineering experience
  • Ground support design and ground control expertise
  • Rock mass data acquisition (through core logging, face mapping) and rock mass characterisation skills
  • Geotechnical monitoring – system installation, data aquistion amd data analysis

  • Strong computer / software skills, 
  • Numerical modelling skill

What the role entails 
This role is a great opportunity to take the next step in your career whilst working on a truly global project. Reporting to the GM Project Services, you will be:
  • Accountable for all internal and external reporting on the project
  • Working with procurement and project controls people, to establish reporting requirements and get good understanding of the different audits on the project
  • Identifying the requirement for each auditor and ensure data exists.
  • Working with other members of the team – finance, project controls, procurement managers and contractors to pull required data.
  • Performing regular auditing requirements for the business
  • Ensuring that reporting is delivered within timeframes and meets requirements
 What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Earned Value Management (EVM), or similar methodologies measuring project performance and progress with, an ability to advise Senior management/Contractors regarding EVM processes and procedures;
  • A sound understanding of project management principles; planning, scheduling, budgeting, cost accounting; reporting and earned value management;
  • Knowledge in the following disciplines; Estimating – Understanding on the fundamentals of estimating and the ability to review total Project and Change Notice estimates to ensure accuracy of estimated costs for the scope of work at hand
  • Planning & Scheduling – Ability to read and understand Project Schedules to ensure a true reflection of the Project progress and forecasted dates. Ability to verify impact of Project Changes to Project Schedule;
  • Quantity Surveying – Knowledge of Quantity Surveying principals and Standard Systems of Measurement. Ability to verify progress payments, final invoices, escalation and Forex calculations
 It would also be beneficial if you have;
  • Experience in the establishment of reporting standards, formats and frequency; 
  • Experience in the, consolidated preparation, collation and presentation of project, financial and other reports Knowledge of EPCM principals, and the ability to interpret and verify project data;
  • General Construction knowledge together with the understanding on the fundamentals of engineering models and construction drawings;
