The Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia is a gold and copper mine located in the Gobi desert of Mongolia about 80 km north of the border between Mongolia and China. Oyu Tolgoi mines or also known as Turquoise Hill is a joint project between Rio Tinto, through its subsidiary Turquoise Hill Resources with 66% ownership and  34 % by The Government of Mongolia . GEOLOGY 
Geology from Oyu Tolgoi mine area located on the border between Southern Mongolia and the South Gobi tectonic units is an area of Primarily Paleozoic volcanic, sedimentary and Mesozoic sedimentary and intrusive rocks. Oyu Tolgoi in the region occurred in the early to mid Palaeozoic island arc. MINERALIZATION
Mineralization and alteration systems in Oyu Tolgoi is characterized by multiple copper gold porphyry. The high-grade core in the Southwest Oyu deposit is a cylindrical shaped Cu-Au porphyry, with diameter 250 and extends vertically for over 800. Gold to copper ratios in  Southwest Oyu deposit  increase from 2 :1 to 3:1 at depth. Chalcopyrite mineral with subordinate pyrite and bornite mineral occur as disseminated  within the quartz veins and host rocks.

Lower grade ore, propyllitic altered basalt by comparison 1:1 gold to copper ratios which spreads extends from 600 m  x  2000 m and occurs in around a core of high-grade. This style of mineralization is distinct from the porphyry mineralization in Southwest Oyu Tolgoi and  mineralized with disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite. To high sulphidation (HS) alteration systems, eroded away at South and Southwest Oyu Tolgoi, but still contained in the Central Oyu and Hugo Dummett deposits.

High sulphidation systems in Oyu Tolgoi mine partly telescoped upon underlying porphyry systems occur at Central oyu and Hugo Dummett . High grade copper mineralization at Hugo Dummett in Oyu Tolgoi mine occurs predominantly as bornite, chalcocite and chalcopyrite. For pyrite mineral , enargite, Tetrahedrite which is a copper antimony sulfosal, and Tennantite is a copper arsenic sulfosalt mineral  occur in the Hugo Dummett South deposit


MINING AND PROCESSING ORE IN OYU TOLGOI MONGOLIA

Oyu Tolgoi mines using the technique of underground mining and open pit mining. Open-pit mining process located near the surface of the deposit Southern Oyu and the underground  block-caving mine is located at  the Hugo Dummett North and South deposits.

The initial development programme  underground block-cave mine for the Hugo North  in Oyu Tolgoi mines is  completed in 2009. Underground mine complex development in Hugo North using block-caving mining techniques to remove the rock ore before it is transported to the surface and the concentrator. Over time, 14 km of lateral tunnels have already been constructed at Oyu Tolgoi up to 200 kilometres of tunnels,  up to a depth of about 1,300 meters, will be built to allow safe mining of the deepest parts of Oyu Tolgoi’s ore body.

Hugo North has probable 499 million tonnes mineral with grading 1.7% copper, 0.35 % grams per tonne of gold content and 3.4 % grams  per tonne for silver .  Contained metals total 16.7 billion lb. copper, gold content of approximately 4.7 million oz. and silver content 47 million oz.  Measured and indicated resources in Hugo North  976 million tonnes with 1.6% copper, 0.38 % gram gold and 3.56 % grams silver.

The open pit in Oyu Tolgoi accesses the Southern Oyu deposit, this is one of three deposits discovered at Oyu Tolgoi.

Mining operation in open pit mine Oyu Tolgoi involves drilling and blasting, explosives are placed in holes drilled into the ground and then the process of blasting. After blasting excavation and removal in open pit  using a combination of excavator  giant Bucyrus excavators scoop up ore from the loose ground and ore rock is removed from a series of benches in pit by using  Hydraulic and cable  electric excavators (Bucyrus RH 340B and 495HR shovels)  Geological surveys in mine allow engineers to know how much mineral ore can be found in each part of the open pit.

Mineral rock ore then transported haul-trucks Komatsu 930Е-4SE. Each truck transports around 290 tonnes mineral rock ore from pit and sent to the primary crusher. mill. In Oyu Tolgoi mine has a fleet of 28 haul truck for transported mineral ore from open pit mine

The primary crusher this reduces the rock into small size which are then ready to be transfered in conveyer belt with length  a 2.7 km to the Oyu Tolgoi concentrator.  The ore in Oyu Tolgoi mine plant be processed through conventional crushing, grinding and flotation circuits is a process for selectively separating from mineral ore. The ore arrives at the concentrator which uses a series of complex mechanical and chemical processes from flotation process

The concentrate  product a fine powder, containing between 25 % and 30 % copper and contains a small amount of gold and other minerals. Product concentrate from the Oyu Tolgoi mine can  process up to 100,000 tonnes of ore each day.  Production in Oyu Tolgoi mine at first-quarter reach 33,600 tonnes copper in concentrate, and production of gold  86,000 oz. in concentrate.  Production in 2015 on the second half is expected to higher, as mining returns to the higher-grade zone of the open pit.
